To repair or not to repair .... Thats the question!
How can you really save money on device repairs? Find out if its worth doing in the first place
Answer the following questions before calling the service agent
How old is your device?
How often has it been used?
Is it a well-known brand?
Did you buy the top of the assortment or the bottom?
Golden Rule: All devices over 10 years are very hard to motivate and here are why:
Washer / dryer / fridge / dishwashers / / air conditioners / microwaves are all designed to be about 7-10 years. If you have a family and use them heavily (4 or more times a week), 5-7 years is the norm.
Now I know people are jumping up and saying that they bought the most expensive brand in the world and theyll have the last 20 years. Well, they can be right. I own a tumble dryer over 25 years old but that does not mean its worth fixing when its finally broken for three very good reasons:
Very expensive brands usually have very expensive parts, fewer repairs for devices that can fix them and as such are very, very expensive to repair.
Replacing a part in a 10 year old machine may well be the beginning of a very long and painful animal trip. Lets say your washing machine is repairing requires a new engine. Once installed, the brand new engine is surrounded by parts that are all 10 years old. So while the new engine is going well, the old pump and gearbox can not be that good.
If one of the parts has broken after 10 years, there is a reasonable expectation that other parts will be worn to the same extent. Logic says that most of the parts in any machine will be designed to last for as long as possible. Lets face it Its not much to build an engine for the last 10 years and a pump lasting 20 years!
The basic rules of thumb so you do not waste money:
Before you call, the remedy should jump on the Internet and find out what a new device will cost you. You can be surprised! Manufacturers can and do quit stocks when new devices come in. If you know where to look, you can really find a bargain. For $ 20, well find you a bargain. Even if you decide not to buy from our suggested supplier, you can use the price we give you to negotiate with your preferred retailer.
If the machine is over 10 years old, do not disturb if it was not a very expensive device. Even when you get a quote, ask for a worst scenario with what other items can go and what they would cost to replace? After spending a few hundred dollars, its not easy to say no to spend a few hundred more if the device breaks a second time. Rather soon you are like a dog that chases a very expensive tail.
7-10 years old has looked at whether it is a good brand and a higher end model at the time of purchase. Even good companies sometimes produce cheapies now and again.
If used more of a family, a life span of 5-7 years is more often than not likely. Again, it has looked into but get an opinion about any problems on the track.
Under 5 years, it is usually worth repairing these devices. That being said, be very careful about the cheap brands no name brands. Many are not worth repairing because the price of their parts is so expensive. You can literally go through a new one for less, so if you bought a cheap device, ask for an estimate of some common parts before booking a service call.
If the cost of repairing the appliance is over half the price of a new machine, remember that a new machine comes with a 12 month warranty. In the case of a repair, the replacement parts will not be guaranteed. If a secondary issue occurs and a new part is required, you must pay at least the work and the parts required to fit the new parts.
With high quality brands or relatively new machines (ie <5 years) it is always worth getting an expert opinion. You may be the 1 in 10 who simply has a broken gear that only costs $ 15 to replace.
Guarantees: READ FINE PRINT! This captures so many people because they think they are covered. Manufacturers usually offer only parts warranties. More times than not things like gearboxes in washing machines are covered but engines and do not sell. The work is not included either.
The problem is that while you can only replace the gearbox when the machine begins to leak because the 5-year seals are not replaced, there are another couple of hundred dollars in work to remove the machine again to get to the seals. So even if the manufacturer gives you the gearbox, the extra parts and labor can exceed $ 700 on a large washing machine.
Grill the techniques once they have looked good on the machine.
